Operations management strategies and techniques are applicable in the design, development and management of logistics systems. Logistics activities include inventory management, warehousing operations, consolidation and packaging, transportation and logistics ination systems (LIS). Successful logistics operations not only enable rapid organizational market reach, with delivery of competitive products, but it may also reduce the total cost of these products while simultaneously improving customer satisfaction. Logistics management studies have focused on outsourcing, supplier development, managing inventory and other strategies for containing and reducing shipping cost. Alternatively, e-commerce logistics (ECL) and third-party logistics (3PL) are adopted and designed for flexibility and responsiveness to dynamic market requirements. Many issues arise in the management of these organizational practices, for example, an interesting proposition behind the ECL and 3PL model is how to resolve the conflict between volume of materials flow and the frequency of transshipments. This special issue of the International Journal of Production Economics (IJPE) attempts to motivate and further research in the areas of ECL and 3PL with the objective of helping organizations with their value chain activities and hence to be competitive as the 21st century global market emerges. The objective of this special issue is to generate research that proposes suitable strategies, relevant s and technologies for the development of ECL and 3PL. The following specific topics were encouraged for the special issue: Organizational structure and ination systems for e-commerce logistics, Partnership ation/ network of partners in 3PL, Business models and ination system architecture for ECL and 3PL, and Perance measurements and metrics in ECL and 3PL. Managing logistics in this new enterprise environment requires numerous managerial and design considerations such as suitable control systems and perance measures and metrics. These and other related issues will be given special emphasis in the special issue. The comprehensive range of issues in the development and implementation of ECL and 3PL include: Strategic Planning for ECL and 3PL: Including business models, strategic alliances, and partner-ship ation with the objective of developing a logistic
