Adsorption is proven to be an effective to remove metal ions from wastewater. Konjac glucomannan KGM is a natural, biodegradable, and non-toxic polysaccharide with unique properties such as high water-holding capacity, film-ing ability, and gelation. However, the application of KGM in heavy metal removal is limited by its poor adsorption capacity and stability. One possible approach to improve its perance is to crosslink KGM and carboxymethylate it to enhance its adsorption properties. Objectives The aim of this study is to synthesize crosslinked carboxymethylated konjac glucomannan CCMKGM and investigate its adsorption and desorption properties for metal ions. s 1. Preparation of CCMKGM KGM will be carboxymethylated followed by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. 2. Characterization of CMKGM and CCMKGM Fourier Trans Infrared Spectroscopy FTIR, X-ray Diffraction, and Scanning Electron Microscopy SEM analysis will be pered to characterize the structure and morphology of CMKGM and CCMKGM. 3. Adsorption and desorption experiments CCMKGM’s perance for the adsorption and desorption of metal ions, such as CuII, PbII, and CdII, will be investigated. The effects of pH, initial concentration, contact time, and temperature on the adsorption capacity will be studied. Expected Results It is hypothesized that CCMKGM will have improved adsorption properties for metal ions compared to KGM due to the carboxymethylation and crosslinking. The results of this research will contribute to the development of a practical and affordable for treating heavy metal-contaminated wastewater. Conclusion CCMKGM has the potential to be an effective adsorbent for metal ion removal from wastewater due to its unique properties. The synthesis and characterization of CCMKGM will be the focus of this study, followed by the investigation of its adsorption and desorption properties.
